www.usgs.gov - United States Geological Survey
The USGS is a very informative site that covers many hazards and includes activity monitoring and hazard education. Below are some of my favorite sections and why:

  • http://earthquakes.usgs.gov - The earthquake section provides a nice activity list of recent earthquakes which can be accessed for more detailed information. At this website you can find recent earthquakes and read a technical report on its activity. You can also view an interactive map that shows the amount of earthquakes across the globe. The "Learn" tab provides useful diagrams and glossary of terms to help facilitate understanding of earthquakes.
  • http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/dyfi/ - The "Did you feel it?" program website for the USGS provides a great map that shows recent earthquakes and a listing that shows the modern Mercalli scale along side the Richter scale. If you feel a quake, you may report your response on this site.
  • http://volcanoes.usgs.gov - This website provides useful information regarding volcanoes. When you first view the page, the site brings up a big map showing active volcanoes globally. My favorite part of this website is the webcam section which lets you view active volcanoes. http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/images/webcams.php
  •  http://water.usgs.gov/floods/current/ - The floods and drought section of the USGS website shows current floods in the United States as well as a forecasting model to predict future floods. This website provides many links to data that would be useful for showing stream flow and inundation. http://waterwatch.usgs.gov/?id=real shows real time information about rainfall in the United States which is helpful in determining a flood situation.
  • http://eros.usgs.gov/ - Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) website. EROS is an organization through the USGS that provides data and imagery of the earth. I found this website to be useful and informative because it provides information, images and links to a variety of hazards that can be visualized from air or space.
http://www.noaa.gov - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
The NOAA provides useful information regarding oceanic and climatic concerns. The website provides many links to forecasting and other scientific websites.
  • http://www.noaa.gov/wx.html - NOAA weather. The weather section provides insight on climate processes and concerns. The link directs to http://www.weather.gov/ which is the government's official line of communication for issuing weather warnings. The website provides an interactive forecast map.
